[sticky] Friends Only. Ish.

Except for the fannish and RP stuff, this journal is friends only. Comment to be added.

(Just, y'know. Fair warning. Mostly I post over on LJ still.)

I'll find a FO banner soon.

Useful Dreamwidth Stuff: Claim Your OpenID Comments

This morning, I ran into a lovely post about how to claim your OpenID comments on Dreamwidth, which basically updates your OpenID comments from other sources (like, for example, LJ imports) so that they come from your Dreamwidth account.

This is a new release and prone to being a little buggy. There's also no FAQ for it yet. On the plus side, you can claim your OpenID comments and merge them into your Dreamwidth account. (Should you wish to do so.) Also, it's irrevocable.

Say NO to ACTA (more internet censorship)

If you're from the UK and you believe in freedom of speech and an uncensored interenet, you really need to sign this petition. There are others floating about, but that particular one is the best way to ensure that your voice gets heard. It's hosted on the directgov website and addresses parliament directly. If it gets more than 100,000 signatures, it becomes eligible for discussion in the House of Commons.

Everyone's been getting so worked up over SOPA -- and rightly so -- that ACTA seems to have slipped under the radar. This is hugely problematic, because ACTA is a similar bill, but it has the potential to be far more damaging than SOPA ever could be.

Some people seem to have this misconception that ACTA is the 'European SOPA', but that simply isn't true. It's a global treaty, and it's already been signed by eight countries, including the US, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore. Europe votes on Thursday. If they vote 'no', the bill will have to be taken back to the drawing board and reformulated, which should buy us some time at the very least.

If you think this doesn't affect you, you're wrong. If ACTA passes, it could well signal the end of the internet as we know it, and that isn't an exaggeration. It's not just about watching movies and television online. If ACTA passes, sites like YouTube, Livejournal, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and even Google and Wikipedia could become impossible to maintain. ACTA would allow ISPs to monitor your net activity and cut off internet access for your entire household if one person is suspected of breaching copyright. Think Big Brother is Watching. I don't think I need to emphasise just how damaging it can be to be without internet access in this day and age, when we rely so heavily on technology.

It's not only bloggers and fandom that would be affected, either. Small businesses, independent film-makers and unsigned musicians who have previously found their niche online would also suffer hugely, and would be at risk of being bullied into submission by Hollywood and multinational corporations under accusations of copyright infringement. All those artists who found fame by uploading covers of songs to YouTube would never have had the opportunity to do so under ACTA, as those cover versions would be prohibited.

I know the internet has its problems, but to my mind it's the single greatest invention to come out of modern times, and it would be an absolute travesty if we were to lose that now. From a personal point of view, I can't even put into words how important this is to me. I've met some of my closest friends through the internet and online fandom, people whom I would likely never have met without it, and it's given me this amazing social support system. I don't want that to end here, and I want to preserve it for future generations so that they can have the same experience and opportunities I've been given through my online interactions.

I know that opinions on the seriousness of copyright infringement and online piracy vary wildly, but that isn't really the point. Internet giants such as Google are opposed to this bill, and it's pretty safe to say that they're not in favour of copyright infringment, as anyone who's ever had a fanvid taken down from YouTube will be painfully aware. Whatever your stance on copyright, this isn't the way to go about dealing with it. This is dangerous legislation that impeaches on some of our most basic human rights, such as the right to privacy and freedom of speech.

So if you're from the UK, please, please sign the petition. If you hail from elsewhere in the world, there may well be similar movements in your own country, but I think the most effective thing anybody can do right now is to keep talking about this. Talk about it on Livejournal, on Twitter, on Tumblr, on Facebook, and anywhere else you can think of. Make sure this issue is never far from people's minds. The internet is an amazingly powerful tool: let's utilise it while we still have the chance.

Please repost and spread the word :)

Black March?

Someone explain to me the point of not buying or downloading media entertainment for an entire month? (Did we make sure to tell people to avoid watching anything on streaming sites like Hulu or Netflix?) Please? Because there'll likely be a rebound and their profits will rise in April, won't they? So...would it be pointless or not?

What will it do to the people who are involved in the entertainment industry that aren't making major profits from it, like writers and editors? If there's anyone I don't want to punish, it's small presses, independent film companies, and writers and editors.

(These aren't rhetorical questions. I would like to hear your opinions on the matter, please.)

I feel that a month of encouraging people to mine public domain sites like Project Gutenberg and the Internet Archive would have a better effect. Like, "before you buy that copyrighted thing, think about supporting something in the public domain in your country of residence instead," you know?

Of course, I may not have a full grasp of the complexities here, I know. But wouldn't a public domain works-themed ficathon be lovely?

What the hell, self?

I have, in the past two days, finished a St. Trinian's story and a Once Upon a Time story, both of which have been sent off to [personal profile] lady_krysis and [personal profile] brightknightie respectively, both of whom are detailed, thorough betareaders.

I also found an SGA wingfic that had gone into character development I didn't like, pared it down into the snarky bits and what I hope are adorable femslashy moments (it's Cadman/Lorne and Heightmeyer/Weir), relabeled it a five things story, and sent it off to [personal profile] monanotlisa for beta.

Today I was looking through my old WIP folders and found a complete post-series Jekyll story.

I know I have a Priest story that was betaread and just needs edits.

When I say that my health problems stopped me from having the energy to finish things, I really, really mean it. And we're talking multiple years' worth of that from my health problems, apparently. OH JOY.

Well, at least I'll have stuff for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon this year, after many years of wanting to write something for it and not having the energy. (Not the Priest fic, though; that's about Black Hat.)

Also, I have at least one half-finished story about Donna being Amy Pond's PA and a mostly done Anna/Bonnie story for TVD.

In search of St. Trinian's betareader, please?

I have about 900 words of fic about Denise, intrepid investigative reporter and (in my headcanon) former St. Trinian's Head Girl. It's set after the second film. Is anyone able to beta for me? I'm not in a rush; I'd like to post this in time for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon.

Fringe 4.08: Back to Where You've Never Been (and universe color coding confusion)

My season one and two DVDs need to get here now. They were on backorder, which is very frustrating, but at $14/season, I suppose I can't complain too much. Even though I will.

Okay, I am confused. Can someone please let me know if I'm right as to which universe is which?

I will spoiler cut, though, as I discuss the current season. )

Spoilers for 4.08: Back to Where You've Never Been )

Semi-relatedly, I need to redo my icons so I can get some more Fringe, Leverage, TVD and TSC icons.

Art vs. Crafts Irritation

Just read this quote in a food article in the NYT:
But hacks will still sometimes get in the door, just as they do in every game: craftsmen rather than artists, regular joes, people exactly like most of us.

OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

Just because someone isn't a chef in a restaurant (critically acclaimed or not) doesn't mean they're not an artist in the kitchen. I'm ridiculously tired of this whole art versus crafts divide (not just with cooking, but with any creative endeavor).

Cooking brilliantly with access to fresh, high quality ingredients straight from the markets and using well built industrial equipment on a restaurant's budget? Along with, more likely than not, a lot of hard study and training in a professional or academic environment? I'm not saying it's easy, or that anyone can pull it off, but having access to good ingredients, academic or industry training, and using a restaurant budget make it a lot easier.

Cooking brilliantly with what you have in your kitchen, on whatever budget for food you can scrape (and by God using everything because you don't just throw out food, that's a waste of money), while (possibly) having to worry about dietary limitations and using average quality equipment that has to be double or triple purposed due to space and budgetary considerations, and whatever training you've managed to scrape from your parents, home ec classes, reading food blogs, or watching Food Network? That's harder. AND YET IT'S STILL POSSIBLE.

Being a home cook instead of a chef doesn't make you any less of an artist in the kitchen. And I am very tired of the idea that it does.

As a home cook who has been learning to cook - and cooking - for most of my life, I have a serious bias to my opinion on this. And that's okay!

ETA: I'm aware not everyone feels this way. I'm also aware of the misogyny behind this same idea. Sometimes I just need a good rant.

TVD: Our Town

Huh, well, Fringe, that's some fun casting. (s4, ep 1)

I suspect that [personal profile] monanotlisa did not tell me that John Sheppard Joe Flanigan was on an episode of Fringe to see how I would react. I probably heard about it at some point in time, but forgot.

(JF is a guy and gets his own tag in my journal. This doesn't happen very often.)

Also, Lincoln is kind of adorable with glasses.

I am intrigued by the first four minutes already.

ETA: With spoilers. )

Unintentional Vampire Diaries/Doctor Who crossover

I don't consider it that spoilery; however, since this is a picture from tomorrow's episode, you might not want to click on the cut. )

Why, yes, I am enjoying my health being good enough for me to make multiple posts in a day once again.

A little more in-depth on Fringe (s1 - s3).

Because I promised [personal profile] monanotlisa that there would be Fringe meta in my future:

I'm not terribly worried about spoilers. But. Just in case this hasn't aired the world over yet. Also, it's going to get long. )

So many reasons to love Fringe. So many reasons to watch and rewatch and go back and check out the commentaries on the DVDs. Someday, I'll even upload some Fringe icons. (Though an Elizabeth Weir icon can't go amiss either, after all. Someone remind me not to write any SGA/Fringe crossovers, please.)

My TV watching future: Ashes to Ashes, Leverage, Doctor Who, etc. And writing!

So. I have three episodes left until I finish out the series. And then I will be done. It will be all over, and there will be no more Life on Mars or Ashes to Ashes. I may also end up finding out what the hell is going on. (I'm not terribly spoiled for the series and would prefer to remain unspoiled.) But that's never a guarantee, not with tv.

I've been procrastinating, because I don't want it to be over. But I want to finish it, because [personal profile] petra has a bunch of fic that I want to read.

Still, Mr. Havoc is starting to insist, and I can't put him off much longer now that we're done with season three of Fringe. Plus I love Alex, more than I loved Sam, and I just really want her to be happy. And she hasn't been, not through the majority of the series.

So, next up on the tv watching schedule: Ashes to Ashes with Mr. Havoc, Lost Girl season two with [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen (I want all the Kenzi and Hale everything, seriously, especially after the Baba Yaga episode), Doctor Who Christmas with Mr. Havoc, and then solo watching of [personal profile] celli's Good Wife DVDs. Plus my constant rewatching of Leverage, because I love the series, and because Sophie Devereaux is on it.

ETA: Also, I need to give Heartcatch Precure a try. It looks like it's totally my thing. I love magical girl anime; I just don't post about it much.

All of this after promising [personal profile] celli that I would write 500 words a day on the space vampires story. AND SHE WILL LECTURE ME IF I DON'T. (You're all free to give me stern looks too.) I have ten to twenty thousand words to go, I estimate, of a daring interplanetary escape before I finish my first draft. Thirty thousand to be safe. I can do this!

Fringe Season 3

They left it there? Spoilers )

That was cruel. The next new ep in s4 airs on Friday. I'm going to have to catch up on all of s4 before then.

I do kind of want to rewatch the whole series from the start now.

Seriously, Wizards of the Coast? Seriously?

Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition? Seriously?

I am not blowing hundreds of dollars on yet another new edition of this game.

Let's not talk about the character generator either, shall we?

ETA: On the plus side, the edition wars in the comments section are hilarious.

sga_reversebang

I don't know if it will happen, but I signed up as an author for [community profile] sgareversebang/[livejournal.com profile] sgareversebang just in case someone creates that one brilliant piece of SGA femslash that I can't resist using as inspiration.

Part of me hopes it won't happen, so I don't have to write anything. But I'm signed up just in case there's something amazing that I can't resist. Which is bad of me. 2012 is the year of original fic! But 2012 is also the year of keeping my options open and doing something fun if it happens.

Who knows? I might get lucky.

Tabletop or LARP Roleplaying Game Communities

Does anyone know of any tabletop or LARP game comms on Dreamwidth? [community profile] girl_gamers is defunct, [community profile] girlgamers is mostly for video games, and this list of gaming fandom comms on Dreamwidth seems to be for video games only.

(Hint: "Gamer" does not just mean someone who plays video games. SHOCKING I KNOW.)
