I love Sanctuary! I have not, as yet, seen anything past the two-part season two opener, however. (I foresee a marathon coming up.) But. Can we discuss things that are both awesome in Sanctuary, and things that are not? For example, Kate Freelander, who is a whole lot of fun in the first two eps of season two, is awesome.

Also, I have a confession to make. Helen Magnus/John Druitt is supremely fucked up, for obvious reasons. I...kind of like it, though. So long as everyone acknowledges that it's messed up and wrong and that he's not a misunderstood woobie. He's Jack the Ripper, and there's really no making up for that.

Last of all, femslashers, have any favorite pairings? (Please, no Ashley/Helen talk; I'm sorry, but I just can't take it.)

This entry has been cross-posted.
Every now and again, I get lovely feedback on my story where Atlantis wants Elizabeth and John to have babies. (Not to mention the fact that Atlantis loves Elizabeth.)

I know, I know. Shut up. I love that fic, though. I wrote it in response to several factors (not just the ones listed in the author's notes of that story), including a story where Elizabeth felt excluded by not having the ATA gene (um, no, stfu), and conversations with mylittleredgirl about how Atlantis loves Elizabeth, and is a little lonely without her. Because, after all, Atlantis had Elizabeth to keep her company for ten thousand years.

Don't ask me how that went to "Atlantis wants Elizabeth and John to have babies." Maybe Atlantis loves John too, and is matchmaking? Never mind the fact that Elizabeth and John are already together in this fic. Babies. (Why did my matchmaker fic involve the damn city as the matchmaker? Why did my brain go there?)

Regardless of why I did it, I have to say, I get some good feedback on that story. So I can't complain too much.

ETA: Um, the fic is here. Sorry.
Carnivale, Claymore, and other Netflix watches.

You know, some episodes, I can really tell that Ron Moore was involved. Like the last two I've watched, which are Babylon and Pick a Number.

For example, having John Hannah's character (whose name I can't remember) hanging the Dora Mae, one of the strippers, and carving "harlot" into her forehead so she could become a ghost who is deprived of her clothes and raped, presumably until Judgment Day, by multiple (also ghost) men, multiple times.

Yeah, way to go there, Ron Moore. Sure, John Hannah's character died as punishment for the murder, but. Dude. I'm still pissy. Way to punish a woman for having sexuality.

Frankly, I'm surprised Sophie and Libby made it out of the episode, given that Libby (omg, Daisy from Bones!), who is also a stripper, told Sophie she'd lost her virginity at 12. Sophie had just lost her virginity the episode previously. And neither of them are married. Punishing women for their sexuality, yeah, fun times. I like shows that acknowledge that sex exists and that it's messy and not often simple. But I don't like it when shows punish women for their sexuality.

Given Ron Moore's involvment, and my problems with women in BSG (especially after the first two seasons), I think I'm glad that Carnivale ended after only two seasons. I'm not sure, though, because there are some damn good actors on that series, and I'm enjoying the rest of the plot. Hopefully this was just a detour from the awesome.

Please don't spoil me on anything past the first six episodes. I'm trying to watch the series unspoiled.

In other news, the Claymore DVDs I've been getting off Netflix have been consistently awesome. I love Claire like nobody's business. Raki annoys me, but that type of character (who doesn't listen to the expert) always bothers me. I'm halfway through the discs.

Other things I've watched from Netflix: The modern remake of The Initiation of Sarah was surprisingly enjoyable, if not great. It had Summer Glau and Jennifer Tilly, and was, therefore, pretty awesome for that alone. The Lost Boys: The Tribe was awful. I mean, seriously. It was horrible. The Thirst, which has the Whedon cast of doom, was enjoyable, if not the best vampire movie ever. Partly it was enjoyable just because of the Whedon cast of doom, mind you. Also, I'm partly through series one of Coupling UK. My God, these people are all crazy. Thankfully, it keeps me amused.

ETA: The comments of the LJ version of this post, while spoilery for Carnivale (if you care), have also turned into a recs list for media with awesome women. If you're into that sort of thing.

This entry has been cross-posted.
You know, even I, who happen to be burned out and bitter on the Gateverse and its PTB, am uncomfortable with the level of trashing of the characters I've seen for SGU. The thing is, you really can blame the PTB (and even dislike the show!) without trashing the characters.

Also. To the two or three people I've seen doing so: Trashing the women and the characters of color = not awesome. (Critique and trashing are not the same thing.) Neither is casually referring to Greer as "Psycho" in your ep review. (I believe the PTB have wised up and removed that as a nickname for the character now that he's been finalized for the series. THANK GOD.)

Like I've said, I hope that I end up wrong, and that SGU won't burn people the way SG1 and SGA ended up burning me. Some of the things I've heard have me concerned.
If you're of the Elizabeth/John persuasion, you need to go and read this story RIGHT NOW. If you haven't already, that is.

Anabiosis & Anacampserote - Part One and Part Two by tenacious_err

Yes, it's ascended!Elizabeth. There is nothing wrong with this trope. It happens to be one of my favorites when it comes to post-s3 fanfic. (The other is when an awesomely evil nanite!Elizabeth comes after Atlantis. I haven't written ascended!Elizabeth yet. I may have to correct that, once I'm done writing creepy Lovecraft SGA fic and fpreg SG1/SGA fic.)

It also involves John dealing with his mistrust of post-Lifeline Elizabeth, and it also has three of my five favorite Ancients(Ganos Lal, Oma Desala, and Janus). Plus! OMG! It's like this fic was written for me (even though it wasn't), because there's bonus Elizabeth and Teyla female friendship moments, and there are not enough of those.

A lot of the Elizabeth/John writers have been drifting away from Gateverse fandom, and for obvious reasons. (My bitter, let me show you it.) But. You might want to come back and read this fic.

If you're in the mood for more post-season three fics involving Elizabeth, I have a metric ton or so of recs here, mostly of the Sheppard/Weir variety, and my delicious account has a bunch more Sheppard/Weir recs under my recs:sheppard/weir tag. I won't make any claims that either rec list is complete. I have a horrible tendency to forget to add fic from friends to the delicious account since I already know where to go to find their fic.

This entry has been cross-posted.
A while ago, I needed some new 10-siders for a World of Darkness game I was going to be playing in. Consequently, I bought these dice. This year at Dragon*Con, I decided I needed a new D&D dice set. I'd actually tried looking at the gaming shop I've been going to since I was eight, but they only had 10-sided and 6-sided dice. (WTF? Since when does a gaming and comic shop not stock ungodly numbers of d20s, plus d8s, d12s, and d4s?) So I went and bought a set of these dice. YES, THEY SPARKLE, OKAY? BUT THEY'RE NOT VAMPIRE DICE.

Anyway, I noticed that they very nearly match a skein of sari silk yarn that I have. It's primarily purple, but with flecks of red, among many other colors.

So now I'm knitting myself a bag to match my new dice. *facepalms at self* I'm sharing this in detail because it's better than sharing my firmly quelched urge to write wildly inappropriate iCarly fic after iThought You Kissed aired.

This entry has been cross-posted.
